Breakthrough, a leading non-profit in India, is a human rights organization working to make violence and discrimination against women and girls unacceptable. We stand against ALL forms of violence and discrimination (which are all interconnected) but have chosen violence against women and girls as a key entry point for challenging them all.
Working out of centres in six Indian states, we equip men and women to challenge the status quo in their own spheres and beyond through community mobilization, agenda setting and leadership trainings coupled with our innovative and provocative multimedia campaigns.

In fact, Breakthrough was launched in 2000 with the release of Mann ke Manjeeré, a powerful music video that shone the spotlight on women’s rights and the issue of domestic violence. The visually stunning video was based on the true story of Shameem Pathan, a woman who walked away from an abusive marriage and became a truck driver to support herself and her child.

The song’s powerful lyrics were penned by Prasoon Joshi and sung by Shubha Mudgal, and actress Mita Vashisht essayed the role of Shameem. Till date, Mann ke Manjeeré has been viewed by over 20 million people worldwide.

In 2015, Breakthrough has released yet, another empowering song Meri Zindagi. Composed and recorded by Shankar-EhsaanLoy exclusively for Breakthrough, the lyrics penned by Gulzar, celebrate liberation, freedom and the joy of living life on your own terms.

Richa Sharma soulfully belts it out with rapper Hard Kaur adding some edge.

Breakthrough now invites filmmakers to create a music video, visualised to the music and lyrics of Meri Zindagi. You could be a professional filmmaker, a media student or even a digital film enthusiast who is passionate about music and storytelling. The top three winning entries will be promoted extensively and will win cash prizes & more…

Mann ke Manjeeré was Shoojit Sircar and Gary’s first music video and it went on to win the National Screen Award for Best Music Video in 2001.
